The more observant regular visitors of this blog will have noticed that my bright orange Mountain Bike is no longer listed on the 'Bike Stable' section of The Purpletraveller...
The reason for this is simple......it's gone......moved on....in actual fact I have sold it.
Now don't get me wrong...it was a very nice bike but I just didn't get on with it...
Like two lovers splitting up "it wasn't her, it was me".
After 50+years of road riding I thought that I should give MTBs a try..... unfortunately to put it bluntly I just didn't enjoy it.....
If nothing else it has confirmed what I always knew.....I just enjoy road bike riding too much..
I owned it for just over nine months...a personal record as it is the shortest time that I have ever owned a bike... usually when I buy a bike it is with me for many years.
Mind you the bike is not the only thing that has gone recently.....
Anne and I have now set a date for moving out of Purple Towers, that date is the 31st March 2015. We now have just under 7 months to sort out all the things that we have jointly hoarded away over the past years...
Each week now sees us having visits to the municipal tip disposing of all sorts of things...
Due to the type of adventure we are both setting off on next year, it's important for us to almost dismantle our current lives...certainly the lives that we have got used to....
I will share our plans with you in my next post......

Moving is tough; I was at the old Command Center for 30+ years. Leaving was both sad and exciting. I focused more on the exciting part.
Hi Trevor I feel quite similar, we have cycled on our road bikes which I enjoyed but Touring with the Panniers on Board covering the miles but not pushing yourself to complete exhaustion is the Road for me.Look forward to getting out for a ride with you will give you a call.cheers mate John D
Hi Trevor, I'm sorry to hear that you and your mtb never gelled. I have a friend who rides just the road and has no interest in trying mtbing something that I just don't understand ? I love riding all my bikes and it's difficult to choose a favourite but if I had to choose one it would probably be my single speed CX Pompino. I seem to go in cycles, no pun intended, until I get a bit bored of riding one then I'll jump on the mtb or road bike for a couple of weeks that way my enthusiasm seems to stay fresh although I'm starting a training programme soon so that will dictate what I ride for a while.

Wow..30+yrs is a long time in one place...We can't claim living here at Purple Towers for that length of time... I like your thinking regarding focusing on the exciting part of moving on...

Next time we ride together you can ride the tourer with fully loaded panniers etc and I will ride my carbon framed road bike..LOL

Yes David..I thought that I would give it a try but just couldn't settle to it... I enjoy riding my various road bikes...each has it's own personality and handling characteristics, which does offer some level of variation and riding style.....
Good luck with the training programme I hope that you enjoy it....
I'm guessing the effort to tour on the MB was too difficult. I suppose some people love it: some don't. I've ridden a MB a few times and was happy I had the shocks to smooth out difficult terrain. But with that said, I'm not interested in touring on one. As close as I get is touring on an older rigid MB. I love it for the low gearing but it has narrower tires for more efficient road purchase.
Sometimes you just gotta move on...
On the positive side I have a 53 year old Mercian which I bought off a friend. The bike is now liberated and enjoying a new lease of life..

Sounds like something really worth owning Peter...a liberated Mercian.
It seems poignant that moving on from the MTB coincides with a new phase of life. You gave the bike a try and life is too short to persist with something you don't enjoy.
Just to let you know on a side note. my first year with the bike hasn't been the expedition I thought it was going to be. I was unable to join my friend on a couple of long linear rides using the train. However it was probably meant to be as I'm just building up some mileage and underused muscle along both banks of my local river. I'm getting to know where the refreshment and cake stops are ... aka putting back on what I've burnt off :-) The last 10 - 15 minutes home is one serious hill for me.
