Jam or Cream First......

The other day we went to the Two Bridges Hotel for a cream tea...........
It was a lovely day to go for a walk on the moors and what better way to finish the walk than a traditional Devon cream tea.....

Now I say traditional Devon cream tea but of course Cornwall also has their own traditional Cornish cream tea.....
The difference between them apparently is if the jam is first on the scone or the cream is first...

In Devon it is supposed to be cream first and in Cornwall it is jam first.....or so we are told...
Interestingly Anne and all of her family are Devonians and none of them put the cream on the scone first in fact Anne has told me that it is only in recent years that the discussion about cream or jam first has come up......
She thinks that it is another of these 'tales' that's put out by the local tourist boards to add a bit of extra interest and in turn sell more cream teas......

Whatever the truth of the matter we enjoyed the day and the cream tea and for what it's worth I put the jam on one of my scones first and on the other one I put the cream on first.....
To be honest I found that the jam on first was a lot less messy to eat than putting the cream on first with the jam on last......

Some images below taken in and around the grounds of the Two Bridges Hotel.......

Jam or Cream first..!!
 Oh... the summer awning is back up again now...... Lets hope the weather continues to be good enough th leave it up until we leave the Tavistock site

Both Dartmoor and the Van are looking good. I think I put the cream on first and then jam, but its a good tourist tale. I remember cycling that route and staying in the Steps Bridge YHA when I did LEJOG. Have you planned your next stay when you leave Tavistock?

@Dave
We've planned a little ahead.. When we leave Tavistock we will be heading back up to Dorset for 6weeks. 2weeks at Moreton so I can cycle some of my old training routes on the Purbecks....then 4weeks back at Verwood for visits to my Daughter and family...hospital check ups.. Caravan servicing and cycling over some more old routes.. Beyond that we have not made up our minds yet ..

Hi Trevor-
What a mouth-watering post mate!!

I bet you can't go wrong whether you go cream first or jam first :)

Loved the photos, especially the view from behind the bridge.

Have a Happy Day!
Safe Travels.
Peace :)

Thanks Chandra..... A friend of mine who lives in Cornwall has told me that the reason they put the jam on first is because with a warm scone it stops the cream melting which it would if you put the cream on first....
I found that to be the case as when I tried the cream on first it was certainly more messy to eat due to the melting cream.

Is that picture above the bridges a grinding stone? FWIW, I find "Devonians" an interesting alternative to "Devonish." Cold scones with no jam would avoid any sort of melting or order controversy, but they somehow don't sound nearly so yummy...

You gonna make a post someday on Mousehole and its proper pronunciation?

@Steve A
Yes Steve it is a Mill (grinding) stone.
Apparently Devonian is the official description although the term Devonish is sometimes used....
Cold scones would be an absolute no..no.. They must be warm.... as you say more yummy.

Not just Mousehole...it could be a post on the most mispronounced words in Britain...That would keep me posting on the blog for ages Lol

Definitely jam on first as far as I am concerned - I mean, have you ever tried to spread jam evenly on top of clotted cream? I'm possible to do without making a total mess!!

I did mean "impossible" - bloomin' spell checker on phone!

@Jason Boynton-Lee
After testing it on warm scones both ways I'm with you on this one Jason.... With the cream on first it made a real mess with the cream melting and then the jam just adding to the mess Lol...

How did you awning fair Trevor. After de mildewing ours and then treating it with fabseal at the end of the season last year it let in water. We didn’t have time to sort it before we had to pack up. So we left it packed and dry in the Dub over winter. Put it up this year and it’s has a few small areas of thin fabric which I have had to put tape over. Have brought a dehumidifier this year and hope this stops the mildew issue. They fad though dont they but it’s still fab. Just hope it can last this and a few more seasons.

We decided not to attempt a clean up of the entire awning as after tests cleaning small areas I wasn't happy that we would be able to fully waterproof it again.... Condensation causes the mould/mildew and fresh air circulation is the only way to keep that to a minimum so we always leave the top of the front zip partially undone and this has improved things a lot......... After reading what others have found with these awnings and dehumidifiers I am not convinced that will work.. Dehumidifiers only seem to work within a sealed environment which of course an awning isn't. Because an awning isn't sealed from the outside air it will be a bit like trying to change the humidity of the entire area which you could never do.
Anyway we have left the dirty marks and will live with them rather than a leaky awning... I hope to get this summer season out of it but I doubt if we would get any longer than that from it. I do plan on a replacement at the end of this season and yes they do fade really badly....The Site assistants here at Moreton have exactly the same model of Kampa awning as you although I think theirs is only a few weeks old as there is no sign of it fading yet probably because we haven't had much sun yet Lol.. .

Six weeks off.

 The visit to see the Consultant went quite well really ...   My ' numbers' have started to creep up again so I am going to be given...
